Pog Does SWCP
This Blog is about our adventures with Pog a fluffy mutt who loves to walk, run and explore the great out doors.
Her real name is Rosie and she is was a rescue puppy from the RSPCA Little Valley Animal Sanctuary nr. Exeter. Her Mum was a small collie and her Farther a mystery, though she has many triats of a Springer Spaniel.
Rosie is looked after by Tim and Amie.
We live on the East Devon Coast and have loved to walk and run the local sections of the coast path and have covered all the path nearly from Exmouth to Weymouth. Unfortunately we never kept a record of the dates we have completed the sections.
So here goes. A Blog recording the route, out of order and over a long time, but lets see if we can do it all. Hopefully we will record all the sections on GPS and post links to the activities here.
Section 1 Porlock Weir to Minehead - April 10th 2017
It was a Sunny but cold day with a biting North Westerly wind. After catching the No.10 bus from Minehead to Porlock Weir we set out on the walk at 11:30ish. The wind was on our back as we set out across the Porlock Marsh and Pog had a run on the livestock free tracks. The memorial to the USAF airmen that had died here sparked conversation about that heroic sacrifces made. After 3 miles the path reared up in typical exmoor style with what seemed a near vertical climb up a boulder strewn Hurlstone Combe. Eventually the path leveled a little and we then made good progress to the top of the hill, taking a small detour to the Trig point Selworthy beacon. The highest point of the walk today at 308M or 1010ft. Quite a climb. I would like to say we intended to make the trig point an integral part of the walk, but we missed the left turn just before this. We retraced our steps and headed back to the coast path.
There are two options of path on this section and we opted for the more direct path, the other path marked rugged. Maybe a walk another day.
We carried on the path looking for somewhere out of the wind to eat lunch. We eventually found a bench and sat down and eat a quick lunch as it was so cold. Pog enjoyed a chew and a drink. Two days earlier we have parked near here and laid out in the sun for an hour enjoying the Sun and warmth, while Pog snapped at the annoying flies. No lying around today though!
Quickly we continued on, trying to regain some warmth following the path as it dropped down towards Minehead into the trees. Eventually we leveled off and a tarmac path appeared and we were in Minehead. We came to the start point of the SWCP so had the obligatary Photo taken and then headed into Minehead for a well earned Drink and a scone. Then back to the caravan for a Shower and Fish and Chips. 9.5Miles in all, How many is that left?
